I'm Not Sorry

Dear Freddie,

I'm sorry that your hair falls in your eyes.

I'm sorry that most people call you a girl when we're out and about.

I'm sorry that we're constantly getting suggestions to cut you're hair.

But I'm not sorry that I haven't cut it.

I'm not sorry that you were blessed with beautiful curls.

I'm not sorry that I get to keep you looking like a baby just a bit longer.

Love,
Mommy

According to Ainsley - Bedtime

BOOM!

Pat-pat-pat-pat-pat-pat-pat...

POP!  Creek...

Clink!

I look at the clock...10:35.  Apparently a certain little girl is not as asleep as she was an hour ago when I checked on her.

I step quietly up the stairs until her little head comes into view.

"Ainsley?  Did you wake up to go potty?" I ask.

She nods.

I think about the oddness of this and ask, "Did you pee in the bed at all?"

She shakes her head, "But I spilled just a little bit of water in your bed."

"In my bed?"

"Yes, I was watching Phineas and Ferb," she explains as she washes her hands.

"Oh really?  Why aren't you sleeping?  It's very late."

"Well, I did sleep but then I was awake and then I was thinking that we could watch some TV, but you never came to your room," she answers.

"I checked on you an hour ago and you were asleep.  How long have you been in my room?"

She looks up at the ceiling, weighing this idiotic question since she has no concept of time and replies "Twenty."  Then she scoots past me and wanders down the hall.

I follow her into my room, where she is indeed watching Phineas and Ferb.

"Ainsley, I want you to go back to your bed.  It's very late sweetie and little girls need to be sleeping."

"Mommy, I already told you...I went to sleep, now it's time to watch TV."

"Ainsley, sleeping for a couple of hours is not good enough.  You need to sleep all night so you can wake up and be a happy child in the morning."

"I'm not tired," she replies.

I ponder this for a moment.  We've been working very hard at getting Ainsley to go to sleep on her own, and so far it's been working well.  I'm worried that if I push this issue and force her back to bed it will end in a screaming match and tomorrow we'll be back at square one.

"OK Ainsley, just this once, I'm going to allow you to watch this show while I finish making Daddy's lunch.  I'll be up in 10 minutes and then it's time to sleep.  Do you understand?"

"That's a deal mommy."

Mirror In The Sky

Life happens in a blink of an eye.  A moment ago I was graduating college and now here I sit the mother of a 4.5 year old and almost 2 year old.  Where do those days and months and years disappear to?  How can it be that my daughter will start Kindergarten in the fall?  How is it that I'm already thinking about potty training my baby boy?

For me, the passage of time does just that, passes.  Sure, there are times when I long for Ainsley as a newborn and feeling Freddie kick me from inside.  But, I think I deal with it well.  I try and enjoy the present.  Try not to focus too much on the past or future.  I try and make real memories with my kids, today.  I enjoy their age and never wish for moments to pass too quickly or too slowly.

But every once in awhile, time jumps right up and smacks me in the face and then it's all I can see.  I'm having one of those moments.  I lay and bed and think about how one day, this will be gone.  This life that I know, where my kids fight over who I put to bed, where my babies cry every morning when I leave, where they jump up and down when I return...it will be over and we'll have moved on to another stage.  One where I don't play a central role in their lives.  And that can be a scary thought, because what if I miss this so much that I shrivel up and die?

I try reminding myself that I've already gone through over 5 years of stages...from pregnancy, to almost Kindergarten.  And each stage is awesome in it's own way.  I'm not terribly sad about the loss of the old because the next one offers so much more.  Once I'm in that new phase, then it becomes the life I know.

So while I'm in this moment, I'm trying to soak up this stage.  Really mold it into my soul.  Even the mundane, tiresome, dull parts that make up this time are being seared into my heart.

I play dolls with Ainsley, even if it's boring.  Even if we run through the same storyline every day.  Even if we have to play with all 50 dolls at once (which is totally impossible by the way).  I do it because this will end and she'll want to play with her friends instead.

I perch Freddie on my hip, then on the counter when my arm is too tired, and make dinner one handed.  Even if it takes longer.  Even though my left arm is way buffer than my right.  I do it because this will end and he'll prefer to ride bikes through the neighborhood while I make dinner.

I tell Ainsley the same Disney princess stories every night on the way home.  Even though she knows them by heart.  Even if she corrects my tiniest details.  I do it because this will end and she'll choose to spend hours on the phone instead of talking to me.

I hold Freddie through dinner if he wants.  Even though I have trouble eating myself.  Even though he climbs all over me.  I do it because this will end and he'll take girls to dinner instead.

I've given up on getting Ainsley to sleep on her own.  Instead I cuddle her up until she falls asleep and actually look forward to her crawling between Clif and I so I can snuggle some more.  I do it because this will end and she'll be married, putting her own babies to bed.

I rock Freddie to sleep.  I breath in his sweet baby shampoo and I feel his chubby hands around my neck.  I  try and memorize the way he feels in my arms right now at 22 months, 27 pounds.  I do it because this will end and his chub will turn to height and I'll have to look up to talk to him.

And when Ainsley is snuggling those babies and I'm looking up to Freddie, I want to be able to recall all these moments - the good and the bad.  I just hope that those stages will be so great that I won't miss these ones so much.

Yoo Hoo! Remember Me...

Why yes, it has been 18 days since my last post.  I did not start 2012 out very well on the blog front.  I have lots of reasons...

Okay, so maybe I just have 2 reasons.  However, as you can see, I've been very busy.  But at the same time I have all these posts and words and pictures swirling in my head.  So even though I'm swamped at work and nights are short, I need to try and make more time for this aspect of my life.

So here I am, returning to the bloggy blog life.  For my return, I have this little number.  My little sister is getting all healthy meets Martha Stewart on me.  She's making her own hummus and nut butters - who does this when Trader Joe's sells amazing hummus?!?!?  She'll probably be one of those annoying people that makes her own baby food too.  Just kidding sis, you know I love you...and I totally don't find those people annoying.  I'm just jealous and completely untalented in that area.

One of my Christmas gifts from Carolyn was a tub of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Almond Butter, that she made herself.  Go...wipe your mouth.  Your picturing how yummy it is.  Yes, it is that amazing!  My kids also happen to love it.  No need for bread or veggies, just slap some on a spoon and you have a nice little snack.

Note: My husband asks that you please excuse his vertical videography.  He always "yells" (not really, he never yells) at me for doing the EXACT SAME THING.  So of course I had to point it out to him.

Most nights, this is what I contend with...only if I don't notice immediately it usually results in screams.  Freddie is not known for his patience.

Thank you Aunt DeeDee!

Side note...yeah, Freddie's hair - OUT OF CONTROL!  But I just can't bear to get the big boy cut yet.

Goodbye 2011

2011 will forever live in my memory as the year we left Richmond, moved back to Northern Virginia, and lived with Clif's parents. Back in January I was sure this year would be the end of me. I spent the first few months of the year feeling down and sorry for myself. Not my best moments.

Though I'm not sad to see this year go, looking back I realize how much we've accomplished in the last 12 months.

We've gotten 2 houses rented (yes that means the Fredericksburg house is rented, they moved in yesterday actually).

We've learned to live in limited space and with most of our belongings in storage. Maybe we never needed all those things anyway.

We've revamped our finances and learned to survive on a tighter budget. This has made bill paying and spending money way less stressful.

We've started paying down debt and for the first time in 3 years we have a savings account...with money in it!

This may have been the hardest year of marriage for me and Clif thus far, and really it wasn't that bad and we're stronger for it.

My kids have been able to spend the last year really getting to know their grandparents. What a blessing.

All in all this year hasn't been the disaster I was sure it would be. But I am looking forward to 2012 and everything it has in store for us.

Happy New Year!

According to Ainsley - Conversations with God

Ainsley: Mommy, when you have a baby in your belly can you get two baby durl twins in your belly?
Me: Well...maybe...but I don't get to decide that.  We've talked about it, mommies and daddies don't get to decide if they are having a boy or a girl in their belly and they don't get to decide if they have twins or not.
Ainsley: Why?
Me: Well God decides that for us.  He decided that first I needed a baby girl and then I needed a baby boy.  That's why he gave me you and Freddie.
Ainsley: But I really want two baby durl twins so I can have two baby durl sisters.
Me: Well, you'll  have to talk to God about that.

Ainsley (hands folded and looking up at the sky): Dod...hi, it's Ainsley.  Please but a baby in my mommy's belly.  But please put two baby durl twins in my mommy's belly.  I want to have two baby durl sisters because I already have a baby boy brover.  Otay Dod?

Ainsley: Mommy!!!!
Me: Yes?
Ainsley: I just asked God to give me two baby durl sisters in your belly and he said yes!
Me: Well, that's exciting.
Ainsley: High five Mommy!

This past year has not been our most comfortable or the easiest to get through.  After 18 months of unemployment, then 7 months of living separately due to job locations, Clif and I moved our family into his parents' house.  That was 11 months ago.

It has been 11 months of living out of boxes.  Eleven months of missing items that are probably in the back of our storage room.  Eleven months of sleeping on someone else's bed, eating with someone else's silverware, showering in someone else's bathroom.

It's not been easy for us or his parents.  It's hard to call it home, because it's not really.  We know it's temporary, but just not sure how temporary.  It's this weird little space of limbo.  Limbo is hard and awkward and stressful...for me at least.

So as the holidays approached, I wondered how we'd keep our own family traditions in place.  Would we be able to eat chili for Christmas Eve dinner?  Could we put up our own tree with our own ornaments?  Would we find our stockings among our unpacked boxes?  Would we go on our own tacky light tour in our Christmas jammies?

I knew that some of it would have to change.  We're living with someone else and spending the holidays with them.  Some of our traditions would have to be put aside for theirs.

But a couple of weeks ago, we did put up our own tree.  And even though it's in the basement of a house that's not mine, that's filled with furniture and framed pictures that aren't mine, we continued one of our own traditions.

We told stories about each ornament.

We munched on beer bread with homemade jam and sipped our special hot chocolate.

We stood back as Ainsley saturated only a few branches with as many ornaments as they could bear.

We watched Freddie awe at the lights.

And for the afternoon, surrounded by my husband and kids, doing what we do every Christmas, it was comfortable and cozy and our basement really did feel like home.  Now, if only I could find our stockings...
